What Is the Moon Phase for Any Date?

The Moon's ever-changing appearance in our night sky has fascinated humanity for millennia. From planning a stargazing trip to gardening by the lunar cycle, knowing the moon's phase can be both practical and magical. I created this Moon Phase Calculator to give you a quick and accurate snapshot of the moon for any date you choose.

How the Moon's Phases Work

The Moon doesn't create its own light; it reflects the light of the Sun. The phase we see from Earth depends on the Moon's position in its orbit around us. As it travels, different portions of its sunlit side become visible.

A full lunar cycle, from one New Moon to the next, takes about 29.5 days. This calculator uses an astronomical algorithm to approximate the Moon's position in that cycle for any given date.

How to Use This Moon Phase Calculator

  • New Moon: The Moon is between Earth and the Sun. The side facing us is dark.
  • Waxing Crescent: A small sliver of the moon becomes visible. "Waxing" means growing.
  • First Quarter: The right half of the moon is illuminated.
  • Waxing Gibbous: More than half the moon is lit, and it's still growing.
  • Full Moon: Earth is between the Sun and Moon, so we see the fully illuminated side.
  • Waning Gibbous: The illuminated portion starts to shrink. "Waning" means shrinking.
  • Last Quarter: The left half of the moon is illuminated.
  • Waning Crescent: The final sliver before the cycle begins again with a New Moon.
