Federal Income Tax Brackets (2024)

The US uses a progressive tax system, meaning different portions of your income are taxed at different rates. You only pay the higher rate on income above each threshold — not on your entire income.

FICA Taxes

FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) consists of two parts:

  • Social Security: 6.2% on wages up to $168,600 (2024 wage base).
  • Medicare: 1.45% on all wages, plus an additional 0.9% on wages over $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly).

What Comes Out of Each Paycheck

  • Federal income tax: Withheld based on your gross pay, pay frequency, and the elections on your W-4. The US uses a progressive tax system with marginal rates — only income within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.
  • Social Security tax: A flat percentage of gross wages up to the annual wage base limit. Both you and your employer contribute equally.
  • Medicare tax: A flat percentage with no wage cap. Higher earners pay an additional surtax on wages above a threshold.
  • State income tax: Varies by state — some states have no income tax, others have flat rates, and many use progressive brackets similar to the federal system.
  • Pre-tax deductions: Contributions to 401(k), HSA, or FSA accounts, and employer-sponsored health insurance premiums reduce your taxable income before federal taxes are calculated.

Why Your Actual Paycheck May Differ from This Estimate

This calculator provides an estimate, not an exact figure. Your actual withholding depends on the specific elections on your Form W-4, which allows you to account for multiple jobs, a working spouse, dependents, and additional withholding. If you consistently receive a large tax refund, it may mean too much is being withheld from each paycheck — you can update your W-4 to increase take-home pay throughout the year rather than waiting for a refund.

Conversely, if you owe taxes each April, your withholding may be insufficient. Check your withholding after any major life change — marriage, divorce, a new job, or a significant income change — to avoid surprises at tax time.

What is the difference between gross pay and net pay?

Gross pay is your total earnings before any deductions — the number in your employment contract or offer letter. Net pay (or take-home pay) is what remains after all taxes and deductions are subtracted. The gap between the two can be substantial, especially at higher income levels or in high-tax states, which is why it is important to think in terms of net pay when budgeting.

Do pre-tax 401(k) contributions reduce my paycheck significantly?

The reduction in take-home pay is less than the contribution amount because pre-tax 401(k) contributions reduce your taxable income. If your marginal federal tax rate is 22%, contributing $200 per paycheck only reduces your net pay by roughly $156 — the rest comes from the tax savings. This makes pre-tax retirement contributions one of the most efficient ways to save.
