How to Calculate Your Final Grade
As the end of the semester approaches, there's always one big question: "What do I need to get on the final to pass the class?" I've been there, stressing over my grades and trying to figure out how much I need to study. I built this Grade Calculator to take the guesswork out of the equation and give you a clear, actionable target.
This tool helps you calculate your current weighted grade and determine what score you need on your final exam to achieve your desired overall grade for the course.
How the Weighted Grade is Calculated
Most courses are graded on a weighted system, where different assignments contribute a different percentage to your final score. This calculator uses that system to find your current standing and future needs.
- Current Grade: It calculates your current grade by taking each assignment you have a score for, multiplying its grade by its weight, summing these up, and then dividing by the sum of the weights of the graded assignments.
Current Grade = Σ(Grade × Weight) / Σ(Weight). - Final Exam Calculation: When you enter a desired final grade for the course, the calculator works backward to figure out the score you need on your final exam to achieve it.
What Score Do I Need to Get a B in My Course?
Let's say you have the following grades so far:
- Homework: Worth 20%, your average is 90%.
- Midterm Exam: Worth 30%, you got an 85%.
Your final exam is worth the remaining 50% of your grade. You want to get at least a 'B' in the class, which is an 80%. What do you need on the final?
By plugging these numbers into my calculator, you would see that you need to score at least a 71% on your final exam to achieve your goal of an 80% overall grade. Now you have a clear target to aim for in your studies!
