About Tipping & Bill Splitting

How This Calculator Works

This tool simplifies splitting a bill by performing three key calculations:

  • Tip Amount: Bill Amount × (Tip % / 100)
  • Total Amount: Bill Amount + Tip Amount
  • Amount Per Person: Total Amount / Number of People

A Brief History of Tipping

The practice of tipping is believed to have originated in Tudor England, where it was a custom for overnight guests in private homes to give a small sum of money, known as a "vail," to the household's servants. The tradition was later adopted by coffeehouses and commercial establishments.

Tipping became more widespread in the United States after the Civil War, as wealthy Americans brought the custom back from their travels in Europe. It became a way for employers to supplement wages, a practice that has become deeply embedded in the American service industry.

Modern Tipping Etiquette

Tipping customs vary significantly around the world. In the United States, tipping is expected in many service industries. While there are no hard rules, here are some common guidelines:

  • Restaurants (Sit-down): 15-20% of the pre-tax bill.
  • Bartenders: $1-$2 per drink or 15-20% of the bar tab.
  • Food Delivery: 10-15% of the total, or a few dollars for smaller orders.

Note: In many countries, especially in Europe and East Asia, a service charge is often included in the bill, and additional tipping may not be expected or could even be considered unusual.

The End-of-Dinner Dilemma: Solved

We've all been there: the meal was great, the conversation was better, and then the check arrives. The awkward shuffle begins as everyone tries to figure out their share, calculate the tip, and make change. I built this Split Bill Calculator to eliminate that final headache and make dining out with friends as smooth as possible.

This tool lets you quickly enter the total bill, decide on a tip, and see exactly how much each person owes in seconds.

How the Calculator Works

My calculator simplifies the process into a few easy steps:

  • 1. Calculate the Tip: First, it calculates the tip amount based on the percentage you select.
  • 2. Find the Total Bill: It then adds the tip amount to the original bill to get the final total.
  • 3. Divide by the Number of People: Finally, it divides the total bill by the number of people to give you the amount each person should pay.

Tipping Etiquette: A Quick Guide

Tipping customs vary around the world, but in many places like the United States, it's a standard practice for showing appreciation for good service. While there are no strict rules, here are some common guidelines:

  • 15%: Considered standard for adequate service.
  • 18-20%: The new standard for good to excellent service.
  • 25%+: For exceptional service that went above and beyond.

This calculator provides common percentages as quick-select buttons, but you can also use the slider to choose any amount you feel is appropriate.
